3 Bible Verses to Read on Thanksgiving Morning

By Chuck Fenwick

Thanksgiving is TOMORROW!

The turkeys are thawed and ready to go in the oven, the pies are baking, and the side dishes are being prepared.

With all the tasks and stress, it’s easy to leave God out of the equation.

So here are three bible verses you can use to reflect on the reason for the Thanksgiving season. Use these as a devotional tomorrow morning before your Thanksgiving celebration.

  • Psalm 92:1-2

"It is good to give thanks to the Lord, and to sing praises to Your name... to declare Your loving kindness in the morning, and Your faithfulness every night."

Start by giving thanks to God. You might do this during every prayer or sometime throughout the day – and that is great!

If you’re in a routine of this already, try switching things up. Start by being thankful for the smallest things, the regular and mundane things, or something specific to today.

Are you going somewhere to celebrate Thanksgiving today? Give thanks for your transportation there and pray for your safety. Thank God for the home you will be using to celebrate. Give thanks for waking up and being able to celebrate with your loved ones another day.

And if people are coming to celebrate in your home, you can be thankful, too! Give thanks for your home and the ability to host people in it. Thank God for everyone that is traveling and pray for their safety. Give thanks for the food you will prepare and consume throughout the day.

Take just a few minutes to pray to God and give thanks for all the things, both big and small, that make up your Thanksgiving celebration.

  • Colossians 3:15

"Let the peace of Christ rule in your hearts, since as members of one body you were called to peace. And be thankful."

Thanksgiving is all about gratitude and being with the people you love the most. But sometimes the people you love the most can be, well for lack of a better word, super annoying.

The people in your life can stress you out. They might nitpick you, bring up inappropriate dinner table topics, or have a negative attitude about everything.

And today you might be in a small and inescapable place with a lot of these people. Cue the dread and anxiety, am I right?

But there is something that can make a small difference in how the day will go – and that is your attitude throughout the day.

This doesn’t mean you have to “suck it up” and take criticism or negativity from people in your life. But try going in with a different mindset.

Run through the list of people you are going to be with today. Thank God for putting them into your life individually and call out one thing you are thankful for about each person in your prayer.

If you truly aren’t thankful for anything about them, pray for them. It sounds weird, but praying for the people you don’t like really helps.

And remember, you’ve got this. It’s one day and then you can go back to avoiding them again! (haha, joking, but really though…)

  • 2 Corinthians 9:11

"You will be enriched in every way so that you can be generous on every occasion, and through us your generosity will result in thanksgiving to God."

An attitude of gratitude can go a long way! Call out your gratitudes and thank God for the good things in your life.

Try a quick gratitude journal.  You can write them in a gratitude journal, type them in your notes app, or speak them out loud during your morning reflection.  Find a process that works for you!
Here’s a quick example of some daily gratitudes you may be thankful for:

  • An especially delicious cup of morning coffee

  • People to celebrate with

  • Changing seasons and falling autumn leaves

  • Your favorite Thanksgiving side dish

  • The book you’re reading

  • An event or vacation coming up

  • Your kids laughter

  • Phone call or text from a friend

  • A movie you’re excited to see

You can be grateful for the tiniest things because that makes life beautiful, right? Don’t forget to take a moment and appreciate the world around you – even if it is just for 120 seconds.
