How to Have a Peaceful Holiday Season

By Chuck Fenwick

It’s the most wonderful time of the year, right?

If you know me, you know I love Christmas. I have a Christmas countdown that I start on December 26th every year.

But honestly, this can be a very stressful season for some of us. And if you’re reading this, it’s probably a busy and overwhelming season for you, too.

We’re not meant to live in chaos. All of us, in some way, crave order and structure.

This is in the Bible, too. The author of 1 Corinthians, Paul, writes about it in 1 Corinthians 14:33.

He says, “God is not a god of disorder but of peace.” We were created to have peace through structure and routines in our daily lives.

But it’s so hard to live in peace when you feel like you’re stuck in the middle of a chaotic world during a crazy holiday season.

So here are two ways you can gain control during the holidays.

How to Gain Control When You Feel Out of Control

Start with One Thing

This is going to be hard, but start small. Determine one thing in your life that is causing physical or emotional clutter right now.

Don’t try to tackle the whole house, your entire car, or your regular workspace. Start by choosing one area.

You might have a table or chair (you know the one) where you throw everything. Your catch-all area.

Focus on that space today. Set a timer for 12 minutes and commit to getting it under control. It doesn’t have to be perfect, but you can get a lot more done in 12 minutes than you might think.

Clearing up your physical space helps declutter your mental space, too.

Begin a New Habit

This might feel like the absolute worst time to add something to your life but stick with me.

Choose a small habit to implement into your daily routine. When I say small, I mean minuscule.

This new habit could be something you’ve tried before and not followed through with, too. (we all have some of those)

Commit to implementing this into your routine for the next three weeks. Set an alarm on your phone, put it on a sticky note, or do whatever you need to do to remind yourself of this new habit.

Here are a few ideas!

  • Make your bed every morning

  • Pack your lunch the night before

  • Set out your clothes for the next day in the evening

  • Write down and reflect on one positive thing every day

Implementing a tiny habit into your regular routine will help provide consistency and make you feel more grounded.

Keep Me Updated

Give these two tips a try! I know that these will help you control the chaos you’re experiencing.
And I want to know how it goes! Send me a text and let me know what you decluttered and which new habit worked for your daily routine.
