How to Overcome Christmas Exhaustion
By Chuck Fenwick
When you’re a kid, Christmas feels magical. The twinkly lights all around, the sweetness of Christmas cookies, and the anticipation of opening gifts under the tree.
As an adult, Christmas is still fun, but it’s also exhausting. You have to find time for so many holiday gatherings, buy presents, and still continue with your normal life. It’s hard!
And I want to help you overcome that feeling of being overwhelmed.
Here are four ways to help you overcome the Christmas exhaustion this holiday season.
Get More Rest
Rest is so important – but we don’t always make rest a priority. You probably don’t prioritize rest during the holidays because you’re too busy to think about it!
Sleeping, napping, or even sitting down and taking an intentional break are all different forms of rest we need to prioritize over the next few weeks.
Over the next week, try to get 15 extra minutes of rest. You can choose any form of rest, just do what works best for you. This could be a quick nap, going to be 15 minutes earlier, waking up 15 minutes later, or taking some time alone to recharge for a while.
Focus on the Good Parts
Thankfulness isn’t reserved for Thanksgiving. The practice of gratitude is important throughout the entire holiday season.
Take a pause from all of the hustle and bustle you’re experiencing. Try to see Christmas through a different, more positive lens. What is one thing you’re looking forward to? What is the best part of the holidays each year?
Stop and take a moment to be thankful for something. You don’t have to write it down or stress about it. Just think through one thing, person, or situation that makes you grateful.
Move Your Body
If you want more energy, burn off some energy! It sounds weird, but when you exercise, you will be more energized.
You don’t have to start going to the gym every day or running 3 miles. But, find a way to incorporate some movement in your routine.
Challenge yourself to move your body one more time than you usually do this week. If you don’t exercise at all, exercise one time! If you exercise three times a week, try to squeeze in a fourth. It doesn’t have to be extravagant.
Don’t stress about running or walking or lifting or anything. Just find one form of exercise that makes you feel good and do it.
Let It Go
Channel your inner Elsa from Frozen and let it go. Try not to sweat the small stuff this year.
We know there are a lot of expectations around Christmas time. But set your expectations appropriately and communicate them clearly to those around you.
From family gatherings, cooking big meals, and adding extra activities to your daily routine, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed.
Give those around you (including yourself) some extra grace. Manage your expectations and don’t expect everything to be perfect!
Keep Me Updated
Give these two tips a try! I know that these will help you control the chaos you’re experiencing.
